Visas for China and Chinese embassies and consulates abroad

The Chinese ministry of foreign affairs has a website online that gives information regarding visas and has also information on where you can find Chinese Embassies and Consulates worldwide.

Arriving in Yunnan by air

The main airport of Yunnan is Kunming International Airport. This site gives the connections to and from Kunming both domestic and international. For the domectic routes the fares are listed while for the internatonal routes the flight a schedule is given.

The other airport is Jinghong Gasa Airport, however no information regarding Jinghong Gasa Airport and how to get there or to get away is available on the internet (if you know a good link, please tell us by using the guestbook).

We got our visas for China in The Netherlands and Bangkok. It is impossible to get an visa upon arrival on both airports as far as the information on the internet goes.

Overland entry into China

There are three bordercrossing from where you can enter and leave South China.

Laos - China

  • From China to Laos at Mengla/Bohane - Boten.
No visa upon arrival for both China and Laos when we where there in 2000. We wanted to leave China and enter Laos and brought our Laotian visa with us from Kunming. We obtained the visa in the Camilia hotel where also the Laotian consulate is. According to the web-site of the Laotian embassy in Bangkok it is now possible to get a visa upon arrival (1 juni 2003) but you better doublecheck so you are sure it is possible. When you have a visa for Laos the it is quite a straight forward procedure at the border; Get a stamp in your passport at the Chinese checkpoint. Cycle a few kilometers to the Lao side, get another stamp and you are in.

Vietnam - China

  • The Dong Dang - Pinxiang bordercrossing is the most Eastern crossing of the two.
  • The other one is the Lao Cai - Hekou (Yunnan) bordercrossing on the bank of the Red River. This border you will also cross when you take the train from Hanoi to Kunming vv (see details below).

We have not tried the bordercrossing between China and Vietnam. But according to the experience of fellow travellers on the internet it is quite easy when your paperwork is ok.
To and from Yunnan by train

Yunnan and its capital Kunming is connected by rail to the rest of China and to also Vietnam. If you are interessed in this kind of transport check the train schedule (for the schedule of the international train to Hanoi scroll down to the bottom of the page).

Unesco World heritage sites

Recently the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Area is added to The World Heritage List.
