Route
Vientiane-Sihanoukville-Buriram bicycle ride (2002/2003)

Daily stages

In General
Our holidays had different starting and end points, so there are 2 routes:
  • The first route starts in Vientiane (Laos), heading south into Cambodia (roughly along the Mekong river). At Kampong Cham heading west to Siem Reap to end the ride in Aranyaprathet (Thailand) / Poipet (Cambodia).
  • The other route starts in Buriram (Thailand). The border with Cambodia is crossed at Poipet. Heading to Battambang, then crossing the Tongle Sap to Siem Reap. It continuous (by boat) to Phnom Penh and goes south to Sihanoukville. Crossing the border with Thailand at Kho Kong/Hat Lek and cycling ends in Sa Kaeo (near Aranyaprathet).

Both rides are show in the map below.
The first route in purple and the second in blue.

The Thai cities where we started cycling (Nong Khai at the border with Laos and Buriram) and where we stoped cycling (Aranyaprathet/Poipet and Sa Kaeo) are all 4 located near a railroad that is connected to Bangkok. So it is easy to get there (away) by train from/to the Thai capital
    (see the
Thailand country info page for the train schedules).
  • In purple Route 1: Vientiane (Laos) - Aranyaprathet (Thailand) / Poipet (Cambodia).
  • In blue Route 2: Buriram (Thailand) - Sihanoukville (Cambodia) - Sa Kaeo (Thailand).
